July 18, 2007: Our BIG Surprise

Actually the big surprise occurred the night before when I went out onto the porch and literally, found fur flying. Mr. Bunny was running around frantically with a huge fur ball in his mouth. Once we dislodged it, we gathered up all of the fur into a plastic bag for a trip to the vet the next day. We could not understand what had gotten into him?! Meanwhile, I began searching the net for any behavioral or medical condition with this type of symptom. After about an hour, I came across a Q&A blog entry that stated: "The night before a doe is to deliver, she will pull the hair from her chest to make a nest." Reading further, I found that the gestation period was 28-32 days and counted back to the date of a now infamous dinner party in which one of the guests brought their pet bunny - Rabby - for a play date with Mr. Bunny. We were alarmed when we saw how they were playing and stopped it immediately but obviously, not soon enough! After joking around about confirming Mr. Bunny as a "Mr.", we all kind of forgot about it. Until now. So we found a box and gave Momma Bunny back her fur so she could make her nest. She had a total of six; four have survived. Three of the babies are black and the runt, is gray with the white ears.

The "proud parents" - Momma Bunny, the rabbit formerly known as Mr. Bunny (a Common Hare) and Papa Bunny, also known as Rabby (a Mini-Rex) are pictured below.
